Lyocell: A Soft, Fluid Cellulosic Fiber
Sustainability & Technical Note
Lyocell is a regenerated cellulosic fiber made from cellulose-rich raw material such as wood pulp. It is valued for its soft hand, moisture management, and naturally fluid drape.
Fiber composition
A fabric labeled 100% Lyocell is made entirely from lyocell fiber. In practice, lyocell is often blended with cotton, linen, wool, polyester, or other fibers to adjust hand feel, stability, price, and end use. Always confirm the composition of each fabric code.
Lyocell is a generic fiber name, while TENCEL™ Lyocell is a Lenzing trademark. The two terms should not automatically be used interchangeably without the relevant verification or authorization.
The story
Lyocell belongs to the regenerated cellulosic fiber family. Cellulose is dissolved in an organic solvent, formed into filaments, and precipitated back into solid cellulose. Under the U.S. textile fiber definition, lyocell describes cellulose precipitated from an organic solution without substitution of the hydroxyl groups and without the formation of chemical intermediates.
Environmental performance varies with the producer, pulp source, energy mix, and solvent-recovery system. Evidence from the specific producer is therefore more meaningful than assuming that every lyocell fiber has the same impact.
Special properties
- Soft hand and fluid drape: well suited to shirts, dresses, relaxed apparel, and designs that need movement.
- Moisture management: the cellulosic fiber can absorb moisture, supporting comfort in many climates.
- Good strength: lyocell generally retains useful strength when dry and wet, although actual performance depends on fabric construction and finishing.
- Versatile character: it may be finished to look smooth, denim-like, or softly peach-finished.
Suitable applications
Shirts, dresses, trousers, casualwear, lightweight denim, resortwear, intimates, home textiles, and blends designed for added softness or drape.
Important notes
Some lyocell constructions may fibrillate or develop a fuzzy surface under wet abrasion unless controlled through production and finishing. Shrinkage, creasing, or hand-feel changes may occur in some fabrics. Test the intended wash process before bulk production and follow the care instructions for the specific fabric.
Sustainability & Technical Note
Lyocell is not automatically a sustainable product. Review feedstock sourcing, chemical management, energy, and producer certifications. For example, Lenzing states that its TENCEL™ Lyocell process recovers 99.8% of the solvent; this is specific to that producer and process and should not be generalized to all lyocell fibers.
